April 2016

From David's Desk

The Gospel passage for April 3 is John 20:19-31; part of the passage is the famous "doubting Thomas" story, but this passage also contains John’s version of Jesus’ giving the disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit. In John the Risen Lord appears to a frightened group of followers who were wondering if they had misplaced their hopes and if they were going to be hunted down to suffer their leader’s fate. Jesus brought the disciples peace and hope, and a commission to act in His name.

The disciples’ fear is understandable, they had seen the Messiah crucified – but the Messiah was not dead. Sometimes we are inclined to fear for ourselves and our nation, and even our church – but the Messiah is still alive and offering us the gift of the Spirit.

The faith that we have received by God's grace through the witness of those first disciples makes us disciples. We share their hope and the work of making that hope real in the lives of people who wonder if the Messiah is real. Whether we are up to our calling will be judged by the fruits of our faithful actions today and the days to come.

Please read the flyer on page 3 from Ken Beckman, our Elder in charge of Congregational Care; this is for information, but also a call to serve your church family with the boldness of a disciple empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Yours in Christ,

Guess Who

March's "Guess Who?" - Pat Campbell

April's "Guess Who?"

  • My birthday is this month.
  • I didn’t mean to, but I have taken over my Welsh friend’s title of “The Falling Woman”; at least I use a walker, but I am getting better.
  • David is jealous of my attitude in the face of difficulty (I would definitely be a whiner – D).
  • Early on, the people here knew me as Amber’s grandmother; now I stand on my own (as long as you use a cane or a walker).
  • Really? The grandkids are calling me “GG”?
  • 10cc (Not the band, you figure it out – D)
