The Newsletter

The monthly newsletter for the First Presbyterian Church of Spring Hill, Tennessee.

July 2015

From David's Desk

On Wednesday I got back into the office from my regular trip to Poplar Estates in Columbia and realized it was July 1st! I guess that VBS and the Ice Cream Social preoccupied me to the point that regular stuff like the Newsletter got pushed aside. Sorry about that. There’re some things I want to bring you up to speed on from within the church family:

  • Ruby Heatley is supposed to come home on the 5th after her ordeal with back surgery and MRSA and rehab; she’s downright giddy.
  • Angela Johnston is flying to England on the 3rd; she will be closer to her son, Ian, and her extended family. Angela will be missed; she was an excellent Elder and wonderful ambassador for our church family.
  • We will be receiving Sally Taylor and Jonathan Thompson as confirmed members on July 19.
  • Warner Durnell, my friend and colleague and our Executive Presbyter, speaks to issues facing our denomination through his E-newsletter. Warner brings a balanced and thoughtful perspective to the issues facing the PCUSA and I encourage you to consider signing up for his email newsletter by going to the following website and clicking on the link: http://www.presbyterymiddletennessee.org/news-and-announcements/. You will also be able to see some of the events going on within our Presbytery.

If you get this newsletter before the weekend, have a happy and safe 4th of July.

Yours in Christ,

David

Prayer List

Please keep our sick and shut-ins in your prayers: Billie Galloway, Liz Jacobs, Juanita Roberts, Jim Victory, and Jean Webster. Also keep Marnie Pewitt, June William’s sister, in your prayers. Please keep Ruby Heatley in your prayers; she is supposed to come home on July 5th. Chris Hogan and his family need our constant prayers as well. Keep Carla Beasley and her family in your prayers.

Red Cross Blood Drive

The regular blood drive this month won’t be regular; as a Donor Appreciation Event the hours will be extended so that the doors will be open from 10:00 until 6:00. Please step up to help our regular volunteers; especially since Ruby is recuperating from her surgery. If you can help let Ruth Cantrell or David know. And, if you are able to donate you can make an appointment at redcrossblood.org and enter the code SpringHill19 or call 1-800-733-2767 or come by and wait.

Our next Bake Sale will be on August 9; drop-off will be on the 8th from 1:00 until 3:00 in the Fellowship Hall; proceeds from the sale support our Children’s Church program. We will have a luncheon on August 24 in Fellowship Hall We want you to know we are still working on the Sunday School Project – sprucing up and new flooring. Thank all of you for your support throughout the year, and we hope everyone has a good and safe summer. Happy 4th of July!

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School was a success. We had close to 40 children every day, and we didn’t run out of cookies! Many thanks to Laura Purtle and Shelby Smith who co-directed VBS; they did a great job, and the children and staff had a wonderful and informative time.

Guess Who

June's "Guess Who?" – John McCord

July's "Guess Who?"

  • My birthday is this month.
  • I grew into adulthood in this church and am honored to have served it in several different capacities.
  • I have had “knots jerked on my head” by folks like Effie, Gayle, Mattie Laura, Johns (Campbell and McCord), and my wife (I have felt knots from the same folks – D).
  • I have two children to be proud of (and is he ever – D).
  • One of the first things David experienced here was my truck burning up in the parking lot.
  • Infirmity can give rise to ‘spirit expansion’.
